Rosy Scenarios
It’s hard to keep track of all of BushCo’s Big Lies. They started with the idea that the citizens of Florida stopped the vote count, when it was truly GOP operatives following orders. That lie stole an election. Since then he’s used a Big Lie to scare and confuse our country into an unjust war. That lie stole a nation’s soul. Now, becuase he’s known nothing but success with the tactic, he’s telling the Big Lie about the elections in Iraq. From yesterday’s press conference at WhiteHousePropaganda.gov:
Can I ask a follow-up, sir? What would be a credible turnout number?
THE PRESIDENT: The fact that they’re voting, in itself, is successful. Again, this is a long process. It is a process that will begin to write a constitution and then elect a permanent assembly. And this process will take place over this next year. It’s a — it is a grand moment for those who believe in freedom.
The election doesn’t need to mean anything, it just needs to happen. BushCo is the guy who staples a hat to your head, shoves a noisemaker up your ass and tells you you’re having a party. And most of America may think, well, that’s okay for Iraq. They’re new at this - that hat probably needs to be stapled on. At least they’ll know what it feels like to go through the motions of voting. But what those people don’t understand is that BushCo isn’t only talking about elections in Iraq. He’s talking about our elections too.
The fact that they’re voting, in itself, is successful. And so when black and other low-income Americans are kept from the polls by long lines, too few machines and broken equipment, that’s okay because it’s the thought that counts. And when one third of America votes on machines that don’t provide an auditable accounting of the vote, that’s okay because it’s the thought that counts. When SecStates across the country are slaves to their parties and run their voting to reflect that, that’s okay because it’s the thought that counts. If they know nothing else, the power elite, whom BushCo represents, know in their bones that the thought is what counts the very least. Winning counts and they’ve stacked the deck so that they will win every time. We, who struggle against the machine, will shout in its din, trying to sort through the reality it creates.
And America will be shepherded from election to election, from inauguration to inauguration being soothed by a corporate press that makes it clear to us that above all else, we value the peaceful transfer of power in our democracy. Chris Matthews gave the game away in an unguarded moment during his Inauguration Day coverage when he waxed rhapsodic on the Rosy Scenarios that Inauguration Day is all about. Because, he said, “We need those Rosy Scenarios. They keep us going in this business.” He would have had it right if he had thought for a moment beyond himself. The Rosy Scenarios he loves don’t just make Matthews’ life easier, they make it easier for the power elite to hang on to power in our corpofascist world. Now that they’ve figure out a way to disenfranchise this country, they will rely on the Rosy Scenarios to help them to continue to do that.
So on Sunday cheer for the Iraqis as they follow in our footsteps of simply showing up. The fact that they’re voting, in itself, is successful. And on our separate, future Election Days we can join together, brothers in the bond, knowing that despite enormous odds against us, some of us bravely showed up to vote - or something. And on our Inauguration Days we can be united across all that divides us as we earnestly and forcefully celebrate the democracies we have, not the democracies we want.

At least they don’t have the Republicans over there actively slandering their candidates. Just killing their people. Their glass is half full.

“shove[s] a noisemaker up your ass and tell[s] you you’re having a party” - This should officially replace the “Buck Stops Here” sign on the President’s
deskdartboard.Sadaam held elections, too. It’s more than just the right to vote.

That lie stole an election…
It’s time to let bygones be bygones. After all, 1960 was a long time ago.

Excellent post, eRobin.
I meant to say only that, but I can’t resist Freespech’s comment. He has a point. I mean, assuming both parties have stolen elections, it must be ok, right? There’s certainly no reason to get all upset every time an election is stolen. I’ve always thought democracy was a rather quaint concept anyway, haven’t you?
