I’ve been Froomkinized

I’d be surprised if most bloggers weren’t familiar with the name ‘Froomkin’. Michael Froomkin, a law professor at the University of Miami, runs the popular blog, Discourse.net and his brother, Dan, has a daily weekday column in the Washington Post called White House Briefing.

It would seem like backscratchingy blogwhoring for me to get too effusive in praising the parents of these two fine lads, for each delivers content I consider to be quite good - and as regards Dan, I don’t say that very often about reporters in the Decliningstream Media. He earns his bread, though.

Why is that blogwhoring?

Well, my first contact with Dan was a couple of days ago when he contacted me about a post I wrote, in which I defined a number of questions I felt the corporate media should be asking of the administration. I then discovered Dan also writes for the Nieman Foundation for Journalism (at Harvard), on a blog I was unaware of, that appears to have launched last year.

It’s called Nieman Watchdog, and is subtitled “Questions the press should ask”. And today, they reprinted an adapted version of my post.

I feel quite honored to have my work appear there. It’s the first time in 13 years that a part of me has been to Harvard - since I did some women’s history research there and at its sister campus of Radcliffe.

Now I’ll definitely have to add the site to our links directory, though I would have on discovering it anyway, because I’m glad to discover some attention being paid to this end of the media critique spectrum. Others point to what the press does wrong, but this one focuses on what the press should be asking if it was doing its job right.

I think it ought to be required reading for all reporters. Rookies would learn what to ask and veterans would be reminded what real journalism is all about in an age where some have sold out completely while others coast on past achievements.

(And I extend my thanks to both members of Gang Froomkin for passing on my questions to a different audience. Now I get to wonder if any enterprising reporters will actually use my questions.)
