Inherit The Name

I’m glad to see a fine creative conservative genius is still doing God’s work. After he skewered liberal Presidential candidates, and sang the praises of populist vigilante justice, I was delighted to read that he has gone into politics:

The Kansas Supreme Court has ordered legislators to provide millions more in aid to schools by July 1. …

Some Republicans who control the Legislature want to defy the court, arguing it cannot tell them exactly what to spend on anything. Their tough talk has educators and others worried the court will order schools to remain closed until legislators comply. …

“I think it’s high time we confronted the court,” said Rep. Frank Miller. “One thing we could do is just refuse to obey.”

This fine show of spine calls for a song of praise. Fortunately there is a handy tune available from an old western movie about another frontier showdown, that even includes this hero’s name in the original lyrics (which were by Ned Washington, set to Dmitri Tiomkin’s music). I don’t think Tex Ritter is still available, but I’m sure some patriotic country singer will be happy to record this ditty:

Don’t public school me, here in Kansas,
Because the Rapture’s near.
Leave that to churches here in Kansas.
Wait…just a while.

The courts will have to face Frank Miller.
If he stands firm, they will back down.
Taxpayers think he is a pillar –
A foe of spending, though it means ending
Government schools in every town.

He is not torn ‘tween moms and taxes.
He knows well whose the biggest ax is.
Bashing judges for their acts is
How he gets funds.

He made a pledge, to ev’ry voter,
He’d not raise taxes, one iota.
He does not fear the teachers, though
What if they say fossils aren’t faux?

Don’t teach me blue facts, here in this state,
For we prefer our spectrum red.
Leave evolution to its own fate.
In our home schoolin’, there’s no such foolin’,
Till they declare Frank Miller dead.
Wait awhile, wait awhile, wait awhile….

Same thing happened here in Ohio. The state Supreme Court ordered the legislature 3 times to overhaul school spending, make it more equitable, and unhitch it from property taxes - in other words, make the parasites pay their share. The legislature ignored them, the liberal Republican justice retired, the Democratic justices got replaced with Repugs, and that was all she wrote.

And Ohio’s school system still stinks. It’s the Repug way.

As one of the “parasites” who doesn’t own property*, I quite agree with you. It’s absurd to link education funding to property taxes, especially in this climate where the price of a home is already astronomical. We need a better way to fund education.

(* I don’t have children and don’t use the school system, by the way. But I’d like to help pay for it anyhow, because I believe in education.)

No, I meant “parasites” as in the idle and useless rich, not renters like you and me…the idea in Ohio was that education would be funded through the state income tax rather than property taxes.
