When the Gangrene Climbs
Well, well, well. Turns out the gangrene of Jack Abramoff has been discovered climbing up the White House’s leg:
“The Bush administration’s top federal procurement official [David H. Safavian] resigned Friday and was arrested yesterday, accused of lying and obstructing a criminal investigation into Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s dealings with the federal government.”
It gets worse. Safavian, who was working on the Katrina cleanup until last week, also tried to get control of a couple of federally-managed properties in Washington for Abramoff. And still more: guess who was Safavian’s old lobbying partner? Grover Norquist. And until he quit on Friday, Safavian was the top purchasing official for the entire government. In other words, he ain’t a small fish.
How far up will the gangrene creep? Will it tickle the toes of Tom DeLay? Does this spell the end to Norquist’s “steal starve-the-beast” campaign? Will Dems demand a probe and will they get one? Will Republicans begin to encircle each other and fire their rifles? Who can say. All I know is that I’m really enjoying the show.
[Oh yeah, another plug for Hog, my new blog. Can’t resist–sorry.]
