More Christmas Revelations
Amidst simultaneous reports of widespread domestic surveillance of telephone and internet traffic and surveillance of mosques (discussed on my own site here), we learn that, among the many measures conceived of to prevent government officials from the consequences of their deliberately illegal and dicatorial actions, putative next-Supreme-Court-Justice Samuel Alito wrote a memo in 1984 calling for absolute immunity for attorneys general who order illegal wiretaps, particularly John Mitchell, who at that time, of course, aided the younger Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, et als. in carrying out Nixon’s activities against his political enemies.
Funny that these same aiders and abettors of an abusive regime hellbent on using the mechanisms of government to destroy their political enemies and hold power might, some day, return to power and do the same thing. And they might, you know, be subject to prosecution for it… so they might want to plan for some immunity. Prescient, no?
Note the year the memo was written. Note it again, and again.
Merry Christmas.
