Iraqis dance in the streets
But not exactly as the Cheney-Rummy administration projected.
With Shiites representing the overwhelming majority of Iraqi opinion, this is as critical to understand as reading an election result.
A withdrawal now saves the lives of US troops. Should a bloodier civil war follow, that’s partly the fault of Sunni Ba’athists under Saddam’s leadership and partly the fault of a White House too hell-bent on a goal to have a game plan after their self-deception ended.
Laying blame for yesterday is secondary to the best interests of our country, however. And, at the moment, nothing less than a complete withdrawal plan, at a date earlier than anyone but Kerry has proposed thus far, suits our best interests.
Every soldier we lose between now and our exit will likely be unnecessarily sacrificed, solely for the sake of US politicians seeking to save face. Why make that Faustian bargain? What good is a face if there’s no soul behind it beyond the one too cowardly to spare the lives of those who shouldered the hardest tasks and the greatest sacrifices?
Our king’s attire is threadbare, his ass dangles below his knees, and he’s still demonstrating the lack of the elementary civility to wipe away its excretions.
