Rocky no longer answers the bell
If his Saturday radio addresses lack the old fire and display the sad spectacle of a punchdrunk fighter with leaden feet, can we finally say his messages fall on ears unsympathetic to his Apollo Screeds?
The media’s lowering expectations to unprecedented levels for Bush and his party. It’s reasonable to conclude that the GOP can exceed a bar set this low.
But even that probability is unlikely to provoke victory dances. Even the expected seasonal fall of gasoline prices next Fall and the rumored withdrawal of 30,000 troops pre-election are likely to be insufficient to do more than maintain a tiny majority in the House and Senate. The House will face near paralysis if the GOP retains a 1 or 2 seat majority. If that happens, the country gains nothing. The Bush Mob would be the sole benefactors of that.
The second item in that link, regarding Al Gore’s appeal, raises the speculation that a candidate who lost under suspicious circumstances might come back eight years later to win the Presidency, duplicating Nixon’s resurrection from 1960 to ‘68.
I’d welcome that, but hope the parallels end with a win. Without the assassinations of anyone. Without third party racists. Without a determination to carry on a failed war to a far deadlier and disastrous conclusion. And without a cover-up of illegal actions of a corrupt administration that somehow failed to convict two of the biggest crooks of all: Rumsfeld and Cheney.
I don’t really fear any of that from Gore. Gore served in the military under Dick Nixon, he knew Dick Nixon, Dick Nixon was no friend of his. Al Gore is no Dick Nixon.
And most importantly, Bush acts like the outcome of a test-tube experiment gone badly awry, with the DNA coupling of Dan Quayle’s intellect, Dick Nixon’s integrity and Jim Jones’ concepts of spirituality.
No GOP candidate will be entirely free of the taint from that, which makes Gore a lock should he go for it.
