And then there were three: each very viable

Notwithstanding Kerry’s presumed entry and Bayh’s quick exit, nor all the contenders and wannabes, it looks to me like there’ll be three major Dem contenders for the 2008 presidential race.

And unless some governors jump in, I predict these three will be THE shortlist of the most viable.

Those trying to call it a Hillary-Obama race are, imo, dismissing much of the country, overlooking the lousy economic prognostications for 2007, and/or expressing their personal preferences.

Some politicians advance out of ambition. Some seem to grow because they listen to the electorate and seek to serve that need. I currently am of the impression that Edwards is in the latter category.

I’ll make no predictions now, who will succeed, other than to say that these three will still be in contention after the first round of primaries.

I agree with the top three and they will be the ones to watch if all enter.
My own thoughts are that as much as I like Edwards he will not be the nominee. He peaked in 04 and with his 6 years in the Senate his little time attendting and voting and getting stuff done will be a handicap. This may bite him worse than in 04. I see his bid running out of steam early.
Clinton is old news. Too much of her. People see her and see the partisanship of the past 15 years. They see her record, and being still a hawk on the war. She is despised on both sides and not trusted. Her status as ulitmate insider will hurt and inability to connect and hold the attention of the people. And a lack of message.
That leaves Obama. His record in the state, including helping push through a bill to cover kids medically until 18 in Illinois, and the legislation that is not reported in the senate like the bill just sponsered with a republican on anti terror in regards to weapons, and his deep intellect will be made known and surprise many. His ability to connect and the fact that even some republicans are seriously looking to support him is a pllus. Independent and cross over appeal will be a major thing.
I think it will be interesting but, this is how it will go down I believe right now.
