LOOK! DINOSAURS! diversion is childish, Mr. President

Other than a couple of minor details, this is all old news. Nearly 3 years old.

Your attorney general and adviser are part of a coverup of the facts:

1) that attempts were made to obstruct justice in the biggest known case of bribing a congressman (Duke Cunningham) and other active cases against elected officials.

2) that attempts were made to influence US attorneys to initiate partisan investigations against Democrats on spurious charges, solely to cast a shadow over their campaigns. Molly Ivins reported years ago that this was a favorite tactic utilized in Texas politics ever since Karl Rove entered the scene: slime the opponent and after the election, the claims of lawbreaking would just disappear.

3) several US attorneys have already testified that they felt undue and inappropriate pressure was applied to them to do these things. And ultimately, several were fired or asked to resign, after they did not succumb to that pressure.

4) of the US attorneys NOT fired, it’s still unclear whether any responded to the pressure and pursued spurious investigations for the White House to influence the outcome of elections. And that deserves further investigation.

The US Justice Department exists to investigate and prosecute real crimes, not to serve as a president’s campaign staff by creating an appearance of impropriety in political opponents. Much has been brought to light that people in this administration have tried to distort, divert or thwart justice, that ethical violations have occurred and possibly laws have been broken. That deserves further investigation.

Rushing forth old information about the 9-11 mastermind to divert public attention from the investigation into the abuse of justice is more trickery. All your political defenders will howl about the success in gaining information about Mohammed, but that’s mostly news several years old and it DOES NOT NEGATE the need for Congress to continue its investigation into the corruption of justice that has been going on for years.

If anything, it raises the old questions: where is Bin Laden? Where is al-Zawahiri? They continue to lead the organization that attacked us and they had to approve Mohammed’s plans, fund them and put them in motion. Do you have any NEW news to report about the leaders of the gang that killed 3,000+ Americans?

Trying to divert our attention from the active corruption investigation is childish and does nothing that benefits our country. It may be true that US attorneys serve at a President’s whim. But that does not grant a president the right to obstruct justice or to use the Justice Department as a propaganda tool.

US presidents serve at the peoples’ whim. When they fail to serve, when they violate the US Constitution or other laws, they, too, are subject to replacement, as are any appointees who break the law, with or without the president’s approval.

Because of this attempt to divert the public’s attention, I intend to write every member of Congress involved in the corruption probe and urge them to be thorough in their investigations. I’ll encourage my family, friends and other US citizens to write them, too.

Do you welcome this thorough inspection? Do you support the concept that ONLY a thorough investigation can determine whether you, your appointees and/or members of your party have broken any laws or not? Do you consider it important for a judgment to be made that either someone is guilty or not guilty, and that it’s the proper role of Congress to investigate and determine whether further action is warranted?

Then why don’t you say so?

The Constitution says that’s a Congressional responsibility. And your responsibility is to uphold the Constitution.

So why don’t you?
