Obama, Hillary: could filibuster telco immunity but still serving waffles
Following Christopher Dodd’s lead, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are poised to filibuster the bill that grants immunity to telecoms that illegally wiretapped Americans.
Both left some wiggle room in their statements, implying they could pass the bill in some modified form. Neither articulated specific points that most Americans would find odious, such as:
1) No person or business should ever be exempted from adherence to a law;
2) retroactive immunity has no place in any system of justice as it supercedes the worth of prosecutors, judges and juries by allowing the legislative branch to encroach on the duties of the judicial branch, effectively practicing jury nullification for reasons that remain secret to the public; and
3) it’s a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment’s protection of citizens against unreasonable searches and seizures.
It’s time to hear those solid reasons cited for opposing the bill. Act like leaders, Senators, not like managers of a Waffle House!
