Business profiles of two candidates with distinctly different views

I can see some very distinct merits in the views of John Edwards and in Mitt Romney there’s a few positives, too. But since this was in the business section, the principle focus was on their economic views.

In another section, coverage of their other views would demonstrate enormous differences. Romney has flipped on every liberal or moderate social issue he stood for as Governor, to pander to the extreme rightists in his party. John Edwards has always held the views he promotes as a candidate, on social and economic issues. He’s done hands on work for the poor and those hit by Hurricane Katrina, via the foundation he created. Which will continue its work, no matter how the primaries go.

Where is there a Republican counterpart to that? Anywhere in our government today?

Edwards has been criticized for being wealthy. Romney’s worth as much as 32 John Edwards. Edwards would pay more in taxes if he’s the next President. A President Romney would shelter his own third of a billion dollars. Yet the progressive tax system we used to have helped double the income of the middle class in the first 30 years after World War II. In the past 26, the middle class gain only was 25%, most of it only when a Democrat was President.

Which sounds like a better deal for 80-plus percent of all Americans?

I have always been skeptical that a rich person, man or woman, has at heart the best intentions of most people–middle class or working class alike. Unfortunately, it takes a tremendous amount of wealth to be even a factor in the race.
