What’s killing our troops is more than oil
So the insurgency in Iraq is fueled by oil profits and other black market activities. But the NY Times also reports this:
A military official familiar with studies on the insurgency estimated that half of the insurgency’s money came from outside Iraq, mainly from people in Saudi Arabia, a flow that does not appear to have decreased in recent years.
Three pages of a story about economic rationales for Iraqis turning insurgent and describing how oil funds them, and only one sentence about 50% of the insurgents’ funding. And coincidentally, that funding comes from the same country that funded Al Qaeda, Bin Laden and the 9-11 attackers.
Apparently, half a trillion dollars later, we still can’t handle too much truth.
