The ABCs of our national defense as it REALLY is
It can be summed up simply:
1) Our military is stretched beyond its capacity and continuing this way will lead to a breakdown.
2) Either reduced commitments or increasing the participants and financial costs is the only way out. Increase means the draft will have to return.
3) Our current government now sees that withdrawal means we lose control of the outcome in Iraq and Great Britain has reached the same conclusion.
4) Unless Parliament and Congress override our President and their Prime Minister, withdrawal is suspended indefinitely.
5) Therefore, either our defense capacity gets broken or a draft is reinstated.
6) Politically, the domestic upheaval caused by draft reinstatement makes that option impossible.
7) So let’s do the only option remaining: ruin our military.
On this side of the Atlantic, however, one other option exists: hang in there till the Dems take the White House, let them do the withdrawal, and spend the next quarter centry blaming them for losing the war, even though the GOP never had a realistic way of winning it, not even with The Surge.

We have never at any time had control of the outcome in Iraq.
Some of us have been persistenly deluded about this.
