Point Counterpoint

Mark, Randi Rhodes is an ignorant slut.

I haven’t been impressed with her Long Island yenta schtick since I first heard her. The previous incident where she face planted in the street after a few too many adult beverages did nothing to endear her to me. And, from the few times I listened to her radio show, there was not a lot that impressed me with regards to her liberal credentials.*

The bucket of crabs strategery of the Democratic Party has not been one of my favorite shows of late, either. Not entirely unexpected, particularly considering the nature of the Democratic Party almost since its’ inception - but definitely not something I like or approve of. I don’t watch car crashes on the side of the road as I go by, either.**

But, just this once, let’s take a look at this particular car wreck:

Besides not being particularly funny, not having particularly good timing, and the whole performing while under the influence thing, why would an ostensibly Democratic radio host spend this much time bashing Democratic politicians? The riff about Eliot Spitzer and his escort didn’t do much for me either. It was like listening to an even more incoherent Ann Coulter as far as I’m concerned.

And I must take my fellow co-blogger, Mark Adams, to task. Earlier today, he wrote:

Purely from a free speech viewpoint, regardless of how obnoxious Randi can be, this reeks if you can get canned for something you said off the air even if it was at an Air America sponsored public event.

which I can agree with to a point. But, when you’re at a company sponsored event, and you are appearing on stage as a representative of your company, there will be repercussions when you put your foot in your mouth like this. My own company has stated, in writing, that any off-work activities a company member engages in which make the company look bad are considered grounds for termination. For the record, I personally don’t agree with this type of policy. But I don’t get to make the rules - I either follow them, or find somewhere else where I can tolerate them.

Mark also points out that any of the usual Republican’t shills in the mainstream media could have said the same thing about the eeeevul Clagina and/or Geraldine Ferraro without any job related issues arising from their statements. But this is not a fair comparison. Could any of the ignorant blowhards Mark mentions say similar things about Pickles Putsch or Cheney’s Stepford wife without consequence? How about if they talked about the cokespoon cowboy or GoCheneyYourself in this manner?

I won’t really make much mention of polite society or any of the other standard objections that Mark makes towards the end of his post. I didn’t really object to either Tina Fey or Tracy Morgan’s comments of a simliar nature because: a) I didn’t hear them until well after they had been made***; b)neither of them is being paid by a liberal radio network to promote liberal causes and/or politicians; and c)they didn’t seem (to me) to be nearly as spiteful and personally insulting as Randi’s tirade.

I have remained largely silent and watched as the Democratic Party has systematically enagaged in a policy of destroying themselves. The inter party bickering at a time when Democrats should be united in their efforts to bring down the Republican’ts is, quite frankly, a bit sickening to me. I certainly am no longer (if I ever was) a big fan of either of the two candidates left (or their organizations). And I find it hard to believe that either the Obama or the Clinton campaign considers the political destruction of their remaining Democratic opponent to be a wise and prudent stategy for uniting Democrats against the real opponents in November.

* - for the record, I have had similar complaints about Rush Limbaugh lite Ed Schultz ever since being (briefly) exposed to his brand of liberal thinking.

** - in fact, I get quite upset with those who slow down (and potentially cause even more accidents) in order to get a better look at someone who didn’t quite get that whole driving on the road thing down pat that day.

*** - why, yes, you would be correct in thinking that my teevee exposure is severely limited.

Fair enough. For the record, I never thought, let alone suggested that she get her job back, just that they pay her off to keep her from doing more damage.

And we both neglected the most important point about Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan: they’re actually funny.

For the record, I was listening to Randi through the intertubez before there was an Air America when she was in Miami. Her caustic on-air rants are nothing new, so Air America knew what they were hiring. Back then when I could tune in Rush Limbaugh on five different stations and the only alternative to Right-Wing hate radio was sports, finding an actual liberal voice in the wilderness was like a drink of cool water on a hot day.

The timing, the long, long campaign, and the fact that Air America is under new management has as much to do with this as anything. Interestingly enough, I just tuned into Air America to catch Stephanie Miller and the first thing I heard was Randi Rhodes doing a recorded commercial for a local affiliate, a dentist.

Randi’ll land on her feet. I’d suggest she look for a spot on XM satellite following Howard Stern, where she can whore-monger to her heart’s content.

That’s amazingly funny to me - I took that graph out of my post because I thought it really wasn’t germane to the issue at hand. But, yes, I am in complete agreement that Tina and Tracy were funny. I don’t think Randi was funny at all with anything in that YouTube video. There probably is more to her act that night, so I can’t say for sure that she wasn’t funny at all.

I am actually more concerned with the signs of substance abuse that she has been showing since she got the plum gig. It does nothing for her street cred, and has the potential of tarring all Democratic pols if it gets way out of hand.

Plus, I personally find her on air persona difficult to listen to for any length of time. So I was sort of half way not on her side from the start. I can listen to her exponentially longer than any of the republican’t bobble heads - so I guess that’s something.

Thanks for not taking this the wrong way. Your post was very good (linked to on Memeorandum, for Koresh’s sake) and thought provoking.

  3. Dean at work Says:

Well if it had had some funny spots it would have been better. Rhodes is no comedienne that’s for damn sure. Michael Richards yelling the “N” word was as just as funny as this clip. I’d much prefer Kathy Griffin for my woman’s political comedy.

I mean what’s all the spite and venom aimed at Ferraro and Clinton? I can understand some of it. I have my own problems with them both, and could throw out a few one liners but this was just vicious and (key word coming) UN-FUNNY!

Of all the problems in this country, and being well aware(as I’m sure she is) of who’s been driving us into the toilet for the last 7 years-she’s ranting at a Democratic candidate and an old Democratic Senator? Randi Dear remember who the real enemy is here. It’s an old geezer that wants to “bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”, and an old sociopath in the White House, hint: It’s the Republicans dumbass.

To her credit maybe this was just 1/10th of her act and she lambasted some far more deserving criminals and fools of the wingnut variety.

Is Randi Rhodes really such a Democrat hater in real life? I’ve never really heard her show but if this is it then she needs to be on Faux News.
