A Perspective on Losing Russert

Yes, I do consider Russert’s death to be a loss to us all. Before him, I think of Molly Ivins, Peter Jennings, David Brinkley and Mike Royko as similarly great losses (and no, let’s not compare each to determine ranking).

I don’t want to speculate who’ll replace him, but will say this: the current state of US broadcast journalism has become so poor that there’s no one that immediately comes to mind as capable of doing the job as well as Russert did. I’m sure we’ll hear people mention his flaws in coming days but despite those opinions, weighing him against any potential successor yields none that measure up.

That speaks volumes about Russert’s contributions; there is a huge void now where once reigned a decent journalist.
