The Warped View of the Constitution in the eyes of McSame
It’s unbelievable to me that Team McCain is going to stake out this territory to base his campaign on. In essence, he’s saying it does not suffice to prosecute and lock up the guilty for life, but we must break the Constitution regularly and repeatedly or the bogeyman will get us again.
The politics of fear continues and the pre-emptive groundwork is being laid to justify continued lawbreaking by the White House, should McSame inhabit it.
Obama never said that law enforcement post-attack was the only means of combating terrorism. He was saying that illegal wiretapping, torture, suspending habeas corpus, violating the Geneva Conventions/US law/international law is wholly unnecessary to achieve success in the effort to combat terrorism.
And there’s an unspoken bottom line that needs to be mentioned as well: terrorism will never be 100% eliminated. It is part and parcel of the world, always has been and always will be. Centuries of history make that clear. But it can be effectively fought to limit its size and scope and reduce the danger. To do that, we must be realistic.
And in the past 7 years, our government has been wholly unrealistic by maximizing fear while promoting scorched earth policies that create more victims of institutionalized state-sponsored terror than there were victims of extremist Islamicism orgs. The ‘cure’ has been deadlier than the ‘disease.’
Obama recognizes this and is stating that counter-strategies can be pragmatic, legal and effective. McSame is saying “Damn the Constitution; let’s blow shit - and people - up.”
