Sarah The Impaler — She’s Nuts
First word from of Charlie Gibson’s interview with Sarah “The Impaler” Palin shows an intemperance and simplistic bombast that makes Dick Cheney look like the definition of diplomacy. Her naivete of world events and how a nation’s leader should present themseves simply boggles the mind.
At least that’s how ABC wants this played judging by their headline: “EXCLUSIVE: GOV. SARAH PALIN WARNS WAR MAY BE NECESSARY IF RUSSIA INVADES ANOTHER COUNTRY.”
Well, that was the headline according to Politico’s Ben Smith. That incendiary tease has now been replaced with
Sarah Palin Defends Experience, Takes Hard Line Approach on National Security. But that really doesn’t change the story even if ABC was bullied into changing their slant on it.
The governor advocated for the admittance of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.When Gibson said if under the NATO treaty, the United States would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: “Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you’re going to be expected to be called upon and help.
“And we’ve got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable,” she told Gibson.
Even pointing out that Palin just got a passport last year tells you about where Russell Goldman, the author of the original piece on ABC’s website wanted to take the story versus what parent company Disney deemed acceptable coverage of Caribou Barbie.
No doubt they feared the “HOLY SHIT!” reaction I and so many other rational Americans might have to revisiting cold war memories on September 11th.

“Caribou Barbie”
Wow. “Perhaps so.” Like, whatever.

I love Bob Cesca’s take on “Perhaps So” on invading Russia:
“With what army?”
Which is pretty much what Putin already said to Bush over Georgia.

I don’t understand your point. Is your concern that, like Obama and Biden, she supports adding Georgia and Ukraine into NATO? Or is it that you believe that we should not honor our treaty obligations under Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty?

as a member of nato that is exactly the proper answer, all nateo members are obliged to help their fellow members.

Look guys. A technically correct recitation of treaty obligations but with inconceivable consequences doesn’t cut it. Besides, it’s clear she was only guessing at those obligations whose consequences were frighteningly reminiscent of of the Triple Entente that triggered the catastrophe of WWI — stemming from an otherwise obscure incident in backwaters of southeastern Europe used as an excuse to turn the flashpoint into a global conflagration.
Bottom line, this neophyte seemed willing to plunge the world into a nuclear holocaust over Georgia — and I seriously doubt she could point to it on a map, at least before getting schooled over the last week or so. No doubt Pipeline Palin would justify such bellicosity because of Georgia’s strategic position as a gas and oil conduit — cuz after all, she’s some kind of energy expert and her whole national security perspective (at least from what I could pick out of the interview) is seen through the lens of drilling, pumping and piping.
Shocking was the cavalier “Perhaps so…” answer to war with Russia, not to mention her firm belief that neither Georgia nor the US has any hand in forcing Russia’s hand in the current conflict. That may be debatable, but either ignorance or refusal to acknowledge any culpability on Georgia’s part is just the kind of thing that gets us into dumb wars for dumb reasons that do not protect American interests in the slightest.
So yeah, the blind squirrel found a nut and gave an arguably technically correct answer — an answer that should give pause to any reasonably thoughtful person about her “unblinking” conviction that Georgia should be NATO members in the first place. She’s not reasonable nor thoughtful. She’s dangerous.
